2015 Misfit Toys Throwdown Sponsored By USA Hauling & Recycling

The 5th Annual Misfit Toys Throwdown was held on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at CrossFit Revelation in Enfield, CT. USA Hauling & Recycling was the title sponsor of the charity event, which was hosted by CrossFit Revelation and Yankee Crossfit. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the “Gunny Sergeant Thomas Sullivan Memorial Scholarship Fund” in his memory.

Gunnery Sgt. Thomas J. Sullivan was a Springfield, MA native and the recipient of two Purple Hearts who also served two tours in Iraq. On Thursday, July 16, 2015 during a terror attack on the Naval Reserve Center in Chattanooga, TN, Sullivan saved the lives of 13 Marines and a sailor by bringing them to safety before returning to face an active shooter, and ultimately, giving his life while defending his country.

Three members from USA Hauling & Recycling, Frank M Antonacci, Chris Jez and Eric Fredericksen, all competed in the event, which included three WODs (Workout Of the Day) with the top teams competing in a fourth and final WOD. Last year’s event donated $6,000 to Last Call Fiundation in Boston, MA for fallen firefighter’s families and also donated hundreds of brand new toys.

Healthier Picnics Presented By USA Hauling & Recycling

Improving the health of our employees and their families has been our focus for some time. In 2014 we established a Wellness Committee to take that focus to a higher level. This effort began in March of 2015 with a “Know Your Numbers” biometrics event that was held at several company locations. From this event, we were able to determine the top factors that were negatively impacting our employee-family quality of life.

It turned out that hypertension was one of those negative factors. Armed with this information, the Wellness Committee explored what could be done in the workplace to begin to address this issue.

Annual summer picnics have been highlights for our employees at various sites between June and September. Historically, the fare at these picnics has been traditional – cheese burgers, hot dogs, potato salad, ice cream and the like. The Wellness Committee detected a correlation between that menu and the problem of hypertension among our employees.

Teaming up with Highland Park Market, the “Healthier Picnics” initiative was developed. In East Windsor, Berlin, South Windsor, New Haven, New Milford, Waterbury, Stratford, Winsted, and Hartford, employees were offered an alternative to the traditional and a more healthy perspective on food that can be good, good for you, and fun.

Highland Park’s menu consisted of tossed salad, grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, and grilled salmon. Sides of cucumber tomato salad, black bean salad, Italian-style cole slaw and fruit salad were available as were turkey, ham, and roast beef wraps. Frozen yogurt and healthy drinks rounded out the offerings.

Hundreds of our employees participated in “Healthier Picnics” and were overwhelmingly positive about their experience. Plans are in the works for 2016 to expand the number of “Healthier Picnics” and the menus offered.

USA Hauling & Recycling Participates In The 2015 Source To Sea Cleanup

A team of volunteers from USA Hauling & Recycling participated in the 19th annual Source To Sea Cleanup on Saturday, September 26th, 2015. The group, cleaning along the Connecticut River on Parsons Road in Enfield, CT, were able to collect a full truck load of trash and recyclables that otherwise would still be littering the river. They joined the hundreds of volunteers from northern New Hampshire and Vermont, down through Massachusetts, all the way to southern Connecticut that took part over the 2 day cleanup. The groups clean in and around the river, as well as surrounding wetlands and tributaries. USA Hauling & Recycling is also a sponsor of the Connecticut River Watershed Council’s (CRWC) yearly Source To Sea Cleanup.

The Source to Sea Cleanup is a yearly trash cleanup of the Connecticut River and its tributaries in the four-state basin (NH, VT, MA, CT). Volunteer group leaders coordinate local cleanup sites where participants of all ages and abilities spend a few hours picking up trash. We all have a responsibility to solve this trash problem— individuals, manufacturers, businesses, and government. By participating in the Source to Sea Cleanup, you are part of the solution for cleaner rivers.

USA Hauling & Recycling Has Company Picnic To Promote Healthy Eating

USA Hauling & Recycling held a healthy company picnic on Wednesday, August 5th in East Windsor, Connecticut. The picnic was part of their Healthier Futures initiative, which promotes living healthy lifestyles.

The picnic included assorted wraps, grilled chicken, shrimp and salmon, assorted salads, veggie chips, healthy drinks such as vitamin water and flavored seltzer, as well as frozen yogurt bars, all from Highland Park Market. During the picnic, a “Skip It/Eat It” guide was also given out, which suggests which meals to choose and which to avoid at common fast food restaurants such as McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, Starbucks, Subway and Taco Bell, breaking down calories, fat grams and sodium in each meal. USA Hauling & Recycling has also sponsored Know Your Numbers, which was a free biometric screening, allowing employees to get numbers associated with their health such as blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI) and blood sugar. The company will continue to expand their Healthier Futures initiate in the future.

2015 Connecticut Tour de Cure sponsored by USA Hauling & Recycling

The 2015 Connecticut Tour de Cure was held on June 14, 2015 at the Durham Fairgrounds. The event raised over $175,000 for the American Diabetes Association, which funds research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes and delivers services and information to hundreds of communities. 316 riders made up the 42 teams that road the 6, 17, 31, 64 and 100 mile courses. USA Hauling & Recycling was a sponsor for the event.

USA Hauling & Recycling Sponsors the South Windsor Rotary Club Golf Tournament

USA Hauling & Recycling and All American Waste were the proud major sponsors of the South Windsor Rotary Club Golf Tournament, which was held to benefit the South Windsor Veteran’s Memorial Wall.

Ralph Mosher, a U.S. Air Force Veteran, a 40 year member of the Rotary Club and a 15 year sales representative for USA Hauling & Recycling, was given the privilege and honor of being the Tournament Chairman.

The South Windsor Veteran's Memorial Wall will be 30 yards long, 7 feet high and will include the seals for the five major branches of the United States Armed Forces (Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard). The concrete foundation and electrical work will all be donated by local contractors. It will be built in the Veteran Memorial Park on Pleasant Valley Road in South Windsor.

In today’s world, when our country faces so many threats to our way of life and even to our existence, it is particularly poignant to remember, honor, and pay tribute to all veterans. Keep in mind our veterans are family, neighbors, and other Americans going back to the beginning of our country. We owe our deepest gratitude to all of those people.

It was President Harry S. Truman who said, “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid.” America should never forget their sacrifices. “Freedom is never free!”

AMWAP Event At Sonny’s Place Sponsored By USA Hauling & Recycling

Sonny’s Place in Somers, CT hosted an AMWAP (As Many Wishes As Possible) Fun In The Sun event on May 9, 2015 sponsored by USA Hauling & Recycling.  Proceeds from the event benefit Make A Wish America and “grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medial condition” in the local community. The event ran from the 8:30am sign up to the 3:00pm award ceremony.

The WOD (Workout of the Day) included 3 phases and a final where the top 8 teams compete for the win. Phase 1 included jumping rope and pull ups, phase 2 was squats, phase 3 included rowing, box jumps and wall balls, with the final included a rope climb. For the full details of the competition, see AMWAP10’s page here. 32 teams of 2 male and 2 female athletes participated, with many spectators in attendance as well. Spectators were offered an all day Sonny’s Pass as well, so they could enjoy all of the activities at Sonny’s Place including Go Karts, Zip Line, Mini Golf and Batting Cages, among others.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. USA Hauling & Recycling is proud to sponsor the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s (MS Society) Walk MS 2015 in Enfield on Saturday, April 18th. The Walk will run from 9:00am – 2:00pm, starting at JFK Middle School. People participating in the Walk will be part of over 250,000 other walkers in more than 700 cities across the country who have walked to support friends, family and members of their communities living with MS.

Roadside Inspections are conducted by State inspectors or police who randomly stop commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) to determine if drivers and trucks are compliant with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs). Violations are entered into the MCMIS database. These inspections establish the bench marks used by the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration. Additionally, the Safety Measurement System (SMS) evaluates a company’s crash history. The crash history used by the Crash Indicator is not specifically a behavior; rather, it is the consequence of behavior and may indicate a problem that warrants attention. The Crash Indicator is defined as follows:

We have an extensive new hire orientation program that includes mentorship. Our new drivers are assigned to an experienced driver for one on one training. During the mentoring our trainers teach Advanced Driver Training skills, industry experience tips, and the safest way to service customers.

Our commercial vehicles are, on average, less than 3 years old and are equipped with GPS, scales, and driver cameras to better service our customers. Our fleet is the most updated and technically advanced on the street. We proudly provide the best equipment to our employees.

  1. OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Included with our commitment to safety, we are committed to the environment. Many of our trucks are now running on compressed natural gas (CNG) in our effort to reduce our carbon footprint. We are committed adding these vehicles each year to our fleet. By converting our fleet to CNG we are keeping our communities safe from harmful diesel emissions.

  1. SAFETY TRAINING

Our drivers and maintenance employees monthly attend 2 safety meetings to review DOT and/or OSHA rules.

  1. MAINTENANCE

Our in house maintenance department employs certified mechanics to provide preventative maintenance on our fleet. These technicians are trained in computer analysis/diagnosis. Additionally, we employ technicians to service our containers and compaction equipment. This ensures that all equipment is properly functioning and enables us to make prompt repairs or replacements.
